Analysis of 28S DNA and ITS rDNA regions showed that Vargamyces aquaticus and the synonymous Repetophragma ontariense are members of Pleosporales. Neither Vargamyces aquaticus nor Repetophragma ontariense do conform to the generic description of Xylomyces. The analysis of LSU (28S rDNA) verified that V. aquaticus and R. ontariense are conspecific. Because of the predominant sympodial conidiogenesis and the aquatic fungal nature Repetophragma is unsuitable for this species.
